WHAT'S THE IDEA?

The free hit is included in Sunday 50 Over and Super 20 competition. It should be introduced for Saturday One Dayers also.

DISCUSSION

This is a modernisation that exists in many modern One Day cricket competitions. Its inclusion makes the game more exciting and challenging.

Issues against the idea include:

• Unnecessarily extending the overs of poor bowlers. (They'll be the ones who bowl 4 wides and a no ball that stops at mid on or something.. Frankly, they'll only bowling one over and that is for giggles.)
• Providing another way for bowling sides to get behind in their over rate.

Neither of these are particular issues in Sunday 50 Over matches. In fact it provides a considerable incentive for bowlers to avoid bowling no balls.

(new regulation)	FREE HIT 11.22 The delivery following a no ball called (all modes of no ball) will be a free hit for whichever batter is facing it. 11.22.1 If the delivery for the free hit is not a legitimate delivery (any kind of no ball or a wide ball), then the next delivery will become a free hit for whichever batter is facing it. 11.22.2 For any free hit, the striker can be dismissed only under the circumstances that apply for a no ball, even if the delivery for the free hit is called wide ball. 11.22.3 Neither field changes nor the exchange of individuals between fielding positions are permitted for free hit deliveries unless: 11.22.3.1 There is a change of striker or 11.22.3.2 The No Ball was the result of a fielding restriction breach, in which case the field may be changed to the extent of correcting the breach. 11.22.4 For clarity, the bowler can change their mode of delivery for the free hit delivery. In such circumstances Law 21.1.1 (2017 code) will apply. 11.22.5 The umpires will signal a free hit by (after the normal No Ball signal) extending one arm straight upwards and moving it in a circular motion.
